Mana: Hawaiian Huna Principle 6 of 7

In this sixth of seven articles on Hawaiian Shamanic teachings that form the basis of Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage, we discover the source of all power.

The Sixth Principle: MANA – All Power Comes From Within

If you have reviewed the first five principles you know there are no limits (Kala) and now is the moment of power (Manawa). But where do we get the power from to act and effect change in our lives?  Many religions put this power with God, with followers taught to pray to God for the life changes they need and/or desire.  Only through God’s will and with His divine intervention, or at least approval, can real change be made.  If a follower of this belief system is stuck in a bad job or relationship they often attribute it to “God’s will”.  Others believe that the power to act comes from past events (karma), upbringing, the government, their spouse, or some other external factor.

In contrast to these many views, Hawaiian Huna teachings tell us that All Power Comes From Within – specifically all power that creates our own experiences, and forms our life circumstances.

To make changes you cannot wait for God to perform a miracle, for the government to help you, for your boss to offer you a promotion, etc. You must reach inside yourself, realize that you are in control, and use that power to effect change. In psychology this is the philosophy of “inner authority.” Decisions for your life are given to you, and taken away others. Once you create this inner authority, you have control of your own destiny, drawing from within to effect change. This acceptance of your own power gives you confidence and control over your life, alleviating feelings of helplessness and despair.

All power comes from within…You have control of your life.

Manawa: Now Is The Moment Of Power – The Fourth Sacred Hawaiian Principle

Sun set on the Big Island of Hawaii

Sun set on the Big Island of Hawaii

Throughout time philosophers, healers, and regular people have searched for the secrets of true happiness and purpose.  In their search for these answers the shaman of Hawaii have developed seven sacred shamanic principles.  These principles are at the heart of Hawaiian Shamanic beliefs and also from the basis of traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage.

The Fourth Principle: MANAWA (ma-NAV-a): Now Is The Moment Of Power

Some Eastern beliefs attribute your current circumstances to Karma. What you did in your past life is creating your circumstances today and you are powerless to help it. Some Western views attribute your present circumstances, attitudes, and beliefs to your heredity or social upbringing.  Hawaiian Shamanic beliefs, however, are in stark contrast to both of these views.

The shaman contend that it is your beliefs, your decisions, and your actions that form who you are today. Your circumstances at the moment are the result of your own actions, not your upbringing or past life. There is no one to blame and no one to praise for how your life is going at this moment. It is you that created this life, and you that perpetuates its existence in its current form.

Always remember that the past is over. All of our scientific advances and increases in our understanding of the universe have not shown any way to reverse the flow of time. Your life always starts now. Now is the moment of power. Now is the time you can control. The rest of your life starts now.

You need to be in the here and now to have power over your life. You can change the physical future by acting now, and you can change your feelings or body memory (your Ku) of past events that affect you. By acting now to view past, present, and future the way you want to view them (IKE – Is the glass half full or empty…), by removing self imposed limits (KALA) and by focusing your attention and energy on the right things (MAKIA) you have the power to act, now.

The Second Principle: KALA: There Are No Limits

In the Hawaiian Shamanic belief system, this is taken very literally: NO LIMITS. If we live in an infinite universe, then infinite possibilities and realities must exist. The limitations in our reality are our own doing and can be overcome when we realize that all limitations are artificially created by ourselves. This principle can go into some very deep aspects of the Hawaiian Shamanic belief system, however, for our purposes we will bring this down to a more practical level. Read the full article

IKE: The World is What You Think It Is – Sacred Hawaiian Principle 1 of 7

Posted on 27th September 2009 by Steve in Hawaiian Principles, Healthy Living - Tags: ,

The First Principle: IKE (pronounced E’-kay): The World Is What You Think It Is.

Is the glass half empty or half full? Is the rain good for plants or bad for swimming? We all create our own reality with how we look at answers to thousands of questions like the two above. An example of creating one’s own reality can be found in many training manuals for professional sales people. Because of the constant rejection (almost no one wants to speak with a sales person, at least at first) good sales people study the art of self motivation. Sales people create their our own way of looking at the rejection. For example, sales people calculate how many “No’s” they receive on average before they get a “Yes”. Then every NO is money in the bank. If a sales person knows she needs 10 “no’s” to get a ‘yes”, she can thank people for saying NO because each “no” is one closer to a “yes”! It is all a matter of perception.

Posted on 13th September 2009 by Steve in Massage Therapy - Tags: ,

lomilomi1Lomi lomi massage (sometimes spelled as lomilomi) is an ancient and powerful form of massage therapy that treats the mind as well as the body. Performed for centuries in Hawaiian temples as a right of passage and renewing ritual, the secrets of the lomi lomi are only very slowly being brought to the mainland. There are many styles of lomi lomi massage that have been passed down through different Hawaiian families. The style described below, often called “temple style”, is believed to be the original form of lomi lomi massage.
