IKE: The World is What You Think It Is – Sacred Hawaiian Principle 1 of 7

Posted on 27th September 2009 by Steve in Hawaiian Principles, Healthy Living - Tags: ,

The First Principle: IKE (pronounced E’-kay): The World Is What You Think It Is.

Is the glass half empty or half full? Is the rain good for plants or bad for swimming? We all create our own reality with how we look at answers to thousands of questions like the two above. An example of creating one’s own reality can be found in many training manuals for professional sales people. Because of the constant rejection (almost no one wants to speak with a sales person, at least at first) good sales people study the art of self motivation. Sales people create their our own way of looking at the rejection. For example, sales people calculate how many “No’s” they receive on average before they get a “Yes”. Then every NO is money in the bank. If a sales person knows she needs 10 “no’s” to get a ‘yes”, she can thank people for saying NO because each “no” is one closer to a “yes”! It is all a matter of perception.

Countless self motivational and self improvement books… Read complete article

At Hawaiian Experience Spa we perform the “temple style” of lomi lomi massage.  In this style we observe the seven sacred principles and include several ancient customs and practices.  You will note during your next visit that one principle is painted above each door in the spa.

Therapeutic Massage in Scottsdale, AZ at Hawaiian Experience Day Spa

Therapeutic Massage in Scottsdale, AZ

Therapeutic Massage in Scottsdale, AZ

Therapeutic massages (sometimes called deep tissue) and relaxation massages are the most common types of massages offered in Scottsdale, and perhaps everywhere.  Our day spa, as well as dozens of massage clinics and individual massage therapists offer therapeutic massages in Scottsdale.  Both therapeutic massages and relaxation massages provide muscle pain and tension relief but they each serve a different purpose.  Understanding the difference between the therapeutic massage and the relaxation massage will help you spend your money wisely the next time you are asked, “Would you like relaxation or deep tissue.”

Hawaiian Experience Spa in Scottsdale, AZ offers several types of therapeutic massages ranging from traditional to Hawaiian. Visit our Scottsdale massage page for a complete list of therapeutic massages offered at our day spa.

A relaxation massage is generally a lighter massage that is focused on reducing stress and relaxing your mind, more than your muscles (see ‘Relaxation massages: Will they really relax your muscles?’ for more information).  A therapeutic massage or deep tissue massage, is more designed to treat muscle tension or pain. In a therapeutic massage your therapist will normally use deeper pressure to affect the release of the muscles causing your discomfort.

A therapeutic massage is the broadest category of massage and overlaps both relaxation and medical massage.  The deeper more focused work in this massage can often be very relaxing and therapeutic because stress reduction can occur once your tense muscles are released.  Although this massage does not have the specific focus of a medical massage, it is used to treat a variety of medical conditions including chronic pain, neck tension, backaches, and more.

Consider a therapeutic massage at Hawaiian Experience Day Spa in Scottsdale when…

  • You have a stiff neck that you want addressed as part of your massage, even if the cause is stress
  • You have muscle tension or pain that you want treated as part of your massage
  • You have a general backache from overwork, life, etc.
  • You generally like deep pressure massages

Consider a relaxation massage at Hawaiian Experience Day Spa in Scottsdale if…

  • You feel stressed and want to relax mentally
  • You feel tired and feel like you need more energy
  • You feel generally sore or week from muscle stress or overwork

Consider a medical massage at Hawaiian Experience Day Spa in Scottsdale if…

  • You have a diagnosed condition you need treated
  • Your primary focus is to get one or two specific areas treated

If you have any doubts about which massage is best you should not hesitate to speak with the us at Hawaiian Experience Spa about your goals and let us recommend a massage for you.  We may be better able than you in determining which treatment will fit your goals, as long as you honestly share those goals with the us.

Note: Some Scottsdale spas differentiate between therapeutic and deep tissue massages. In this case the therapeutic massage is basically a partial deep tissue massage where the therapist uses deep tissue techniques for part of the time. Unless you know you want a full deep massage for the whole time, the therapeutic massage will suit your needs fine.  There is no need to spend the extra money for the ‘deep tissue’.

Piriformis syndrome and sciatica can be treated with medical massage therapy

Posted on 25th September 2009 by Steve in Massage Therapy, Medical Conditions
Tight piriformis muscles compress the sciatic nerve

Tight piriformis muscles compress the sciatic nerve

Piriformis Syndrome is a disorder caused when the piriformis muscle irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve causing leg pain (both aching and shooting pains), leg numbness, leg cramps, reduced hip range of motion and pain deep in the buttocks. Many people refer to these symptoms as ‘sciatica’. Medical or neuromuscular massage therapy is a very effective treatment for piriformis syndrome and is especially helpful when combined with stretching and exercise.

The piriformis is a small but important muscle located deep in your backside, beneath the gluteus maximus. The importance of this muscle is its proximity to the sciatic nerve (the largest nerve in the body) which supplies the lower extremities with motor and sensory function. The sciatic nerve runs just under this muscle and, in up to 15% of the population, the sciatic nerve goes directly through the muscle. When this muscle is over contracted it can compress the nerve causing you lots of pain and aggravation.

Description and location of Piriformis
The piriformis is a lateral rotator of the hip. This means it is responsible, along with other muscles, for turning your leg to the outside. If you stand and lift your foot off the ground bending your knee, then turn your knee towards the outside of your body, you are laterally rotating your hip. You will find this muscle in the upper middle of your gluteal area.

All muscles are described in part by three characteristics called origin, insertion, and action. The origin and insertion are the two main points on your body where the muscle is attached and the action is movement the muscle performs. These are called the O’s, I’s, and A’s of the muscle. For the piriformis the O’s, I’s, and A’s are as follows:

  • Origin – Anterior surface of the sacrum. The sacrum is the flattish part of your spine just above your tail bone or coccyx.
  • Insertion – Greater trochanter of the femur (the ball shaped top of your femur (thigh) bone on the outside of your leg).
  • Action – Lateral rotation of the hip (described above) and to a lesser extent, abduction of the hip (moving the leg directly away from the body to the outside).

If you have symptoms of piriformis syndrome, it is important to be aware that several other, more serious disorders can cause some or all of the symptoms mentioned above. These include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and more. Always check with your doctor to diagnose and treat any medical problems.

If you do suffer from piriformis syndrome, medical massage as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, can eliminate the symptoms in many patients. As massage “releases” tight muscles, it is obvious that conditions caused or irritated by tight muscles can effectively be treated with the proper type of massage therapy. A comprehensive treatment plan may consist of massage therapy, stretches, proper nutrition, and in some cases medication and physical therapy.

The most important thing to remember is that in almost all cases pain can be reduced or eliminated by proper diagnoses and treatment of your condition. Don’t feel you have to suffer with pain because you have had poor results in the past. This is a very treatable condition with medical massage therapy being a critical element in the overall treatment plan.

At Hawaiian Experience Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona we treat many clients suffering from piriformis syndrome and sciatica.  By releasing the piriformis through medical massage therapy clients usually experience significant relief in only one visit (although several visits may be necessary to eliminate all symptoms).

If you are experiencing the symptoms of piriformis syndrome, make an appointment at our Scottsdale Day Spa for a Medical Massage today.

Get your rub down with a masseuse at a massage parlor, or get a massage with a therapist at a day spa in Scottsdale, Arizona

A good rub down / Source: Wikimedia Commons

As times change and the world evolves so does the meaning of many words in our language.  Decades ago a masseuse was a person who could do wonders with his hands as he massaged your tension away.  The masseuses might be found at a local massage parlor where businessmen would visit to indulge in the pleasures of a good rub down.  A boxer might get a good rub down by his masseuse before and after his fight because the massage helped his muscles work at optimal efficiency.  As we approach 2010 however, the above terms have gone the way of ‘gay’ when describing your state of happiness.
